چکیده

New solutions to the abelian U(1) Higgs model, corresponding to vortices of integer and half-integer winding number bound onto the edges of domain walls and possibly surrounded by annular current flows, are described, based on a fine-grained analysis of the topology of such configurations in spacetime. The existence of these states, which saturate BPS bounds in specific limits and are quite reminiscent of D-branes and membranes in general, could have interesting and some important consequences in a wide range of physical contexts. For instance, they raise the possibility that for some regimes of couplings the usual vortex of unit winding number would split into two vortices each of one-half winding number bound by a domain wall. A similar approach may also be relevant to other known topological states of field theory. PACS numbers: 03.50.-z, 11.15.Ex, 11.27.+d, 74.20.De, 74.25.Ha

Quantum oscillations of self-dual Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortices

In this paper we present some new results on the quantization of the self dual multi-vortex solutions of the Abelian Higgs model. We also take the opportunity to offer a detailed description of the concepts and techniques that allowed us to compute the one-loop quantum correction to the mass of self-dual Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortices with one quantum of magnetic flux in the Rapid Communicat...

Instability of a Nielsen-Olesen Vortex Embedded in the Electroweak Theory: II. Electroweak Vortices and Gauge Equivalence†

Vortex configurations in the electroweak gauge theory are investigated. Two gauge-inequivalent solutions of the field equations, the Z and W vortices, have previously been found. They correspond to embeddings of the abelian Nielsen-Olesen vortex solution into a U(1) subgroup of SU(2)×U(1). It is shown here that any electroweak vortex solution can be mapped into a solution of the same energy wit...

Exact solutions of the 2D Ginzburg-Landau equation by the first integral method

The first integral method is an efficient method for obtaining exact solutions of some nonlinear partial differential equations. This method can be applied to non integrable equations as well as to integrable ones. In this paper, the first integral method is used to construct exact solutions of the 2D Ginzburg-Landau equation.

Weyl Invariant Formulation of Flux-Tube Solution in the Dual Ginzburg-Landau Theory

The flux-tube solution in the dual Ginzburg-Landau (DGL) theory in the Bogomol’nyi limit is studied by using the manifestly Weyl invariant form of the DGL Lagrangian. The dual gauge symmetry is extended to [U(1)]m, and accordingly, there appear three different types of the flux-tube. The string tension for each flux-tube is calculated analytically and is found to be the same owing to the Weyl s...

Instability of a Nielsen-Olesen Vortex Embedded in the Electroweak Theory:‡ I. The Single-Component Higgs Gauge

The stability of an abelian (Nielsen-Olesen) vortex embedded in the electroweak theory against W production is investigated in a gauge defined by the condition of a single-component Higgs field. The model is characterized by the parameters β = (H MZ ) and γ = cos θw where θw is the weak mixing angle. It is shown that the equations for W’s in the background of the Nielsen-Olesen vortex have no s...
